Seed Paper That Actually Grows
A practical guide to plantable paper for Australian events.
What Is Seed Paper?
Seed paper is paper embedded with seeds that grow when planted. When it’s made properly, it behaves like normal paper during use, then breaks down naturally in the soil, allowing the seeds inside it to germinate.
At Terra Tag, we use handmade seed paper to create premium, zero-waste name badges for conferences and events across Australia, using seed paper made specifically for Australian conditions. This page explains what seed paper is, how it works, what affects germination, and how to choose the right type of seed paper without guesswork.
If you’re here to understand seed paper, you’re in the right place.

How Seed Paper Is Made and Used
Wondering how does seed paper work, it starts with embedding seeds into pulp during the papermaking process.

1. Seeds go into the pulp
Seeds are mixed directly into paper pulp during the paper-making process, so they’re embedded throughout the sheet.

2: Paper is formed/dried
The pulp is pressed into paper and dried carefully so the seeds stay viable and evenly distributed.

3: Use like normal paper
Once dry, the paper can be printed on and used like regular paper. After your event, it’s ready for its second life.

4. Plant it. Watch it grow
Tear it up, cover lightly with soil, water well, and keep it moist. As the paper breaks down, the seeds germinate.
Seeded paper works best when seeds, paper thickness, and printing methods are designed to work together. Terra Tag uses non GMO seeds and water based inks to keep the planting outcome reliable, not just hopeful.
Why Some Seed Paper Grows Better Than Others
Yes, seed paper really does work when it is designed and produced properly. Reliable results depend on four things being considered together when producing seeded paper that is designed to grow.

1. Fresh, non GMO seeds
Seed paper is only as good as the seeds inside it. All Terra Tag seed paper uses fresh, non GMO seeds selected for germination reliability and resilience, not novelty. Seed choice directly affects how consistently paper grows, particularly across different climates and planting conditions.

2. Engineered to break down
Seed paper needs to be strong enough to be handled, printed, and worn at an event, yet porous enough to break down once planted. Paper that is too dense restricts plant growth. Paper that is too fragile fails during use. Fibre composition, thickness, and seed distribution all matter in the effectiveness of the material.

3. Water based, seed safe printing
Printing methods have a direct impact on germination. Excessive heat, pressure, or unsuitable inks can damage seeds before the paper ever reaches soil. Terra Tag uses water based inks and seed safe printing processes developed specifically for plantable paper.

4. Designed for real world use
A seed paper postcard, clothing tag or flyer that goes straight into a pot has different demands to a seed paper name badge worn all day at a conference. Our seed paper is designed to withstand real event conditions, then grow reliably afterwards.
From Event to Soil: The Seed Paper Lifecycle
This material works best when seeds, paper thickness, and printing methods are designed together. We use non GMO seeds and water based inks to keep the planting outcome reliable, not just hopeful.

Our Seed Paper Types and Why We Chose Them
Our seed paper is made with carefully selected, non GMO seeds chosen for reliability, beauty, and real world growing success across Australia. Each blend is designed to work with handmade seed paper, water based inks, and Australian conditions, so what gets planted has the best chance of actually growing, not just sounding good on paper.
Lemon-scented Bottlebrush (Callistemon citrinus)
Talk about a showstopper. The Lemon-scented Bottlebrush is an Aussie native with serious flair. Those bold red blooms don’t just look good, they’re a magnet for bees, birds and butterflies. It’s evergreen, lemon zesty, and tough as nails, making it ideal for seed paper planting in a wide range of Australian climates. Whether you’re jazzing up a garden bed or a balcony pot, this resilient shrub brings colour, scent, and wildlife friendly vibes to your space.
Herb Garden Mix (Oregano, Parsley, Thyme)
Perfect for a culinary twist. This seed paper herb mix sprouts into practical, everyday kitchen herbs. Attendees can grow a mini herb garden from their name badge. How cool is that. The oregano, parsley, and thyme combo thrives in pots or garden beds, providing fresh herbs for cooking. It’s like gifting an experience and flavour in one, all from plantable seed paper.
Flower Mix (Swan River Daisy, Forget-Me-Not, Alyssum)
A mix of hardy blooms including Swan River Daisy, Forget Me Not, and Alyssum. We may swap out varieties such as Chamomile depending on seasonal availability and growing conditions. This seed paper flower mix creates a burst of colour while providing food for local bees and butterflies, making it a popular choice for eco friendly events and conferences.
We’re full of plant wisdom and can recommend the ideal seed paper type based on when and where your event is happening. We’ve supplied sustainable, plantable badges for events all over Australia, from tropical North Queensland to temperate Melbourne, so we know what grows well in each area. Our seeded paper is handmade in Australia using post consumer paper waste and non GMO seeds. We select seed varieties with Australian conditions in mind and take biosecurity seriously.
Because seed paper contains live seeds, sourcing and selection matter. This is not an area for shortcuts or vague claims. If you have specific questions about planting locations or seed suitability, we are always happy to talk them through with you.
Why Terra Tag Seed Paper Is Different
We do not treat our seeded paper as a novelty material. We treat it as a system. Our paper is handmade by a master papermaker using recycled paper waste and carefully selected seeds. Each batch is produced with controlled thickness and even seed distribution, then printed using water based inks and seed safe methods. We design specifically for events, including multiple print runs to accommodate late registrations. We have never missed an event deadline. The result is seed paper Australia loves, that behaves predictably, prints cleanly, and grows when planted.

What YOU should look for in quality seed paper …
Planting Seed Paper Successfully
Planting seed paper is simple, but a few small details make a big difference to how well it grows.

Step 1: Start with the Right Soil
Choose loose, well-draining soil that’s already slightly moist. Soft, crumbly soil gives seed paper the best chance to break down and lets seeds settle in easily. Avoid dry or compacted soil, which can slow germination.

Step 2: Place and Cover Lightly
Lay your seed paper on top of the soil. You can tear it into smaller pieces if you like. Gently cover with a thin layer of soil, around 3mm. Seed paper should be lightly covered, not buried, as the seeds need some light to sprout.

Step 3: Water Thoroughly
Water the area until the paper is fully soaked and the soil is evenly moist. The goal is damp, not flooded. Keeping the soil consistently moist is one of the most important factors when planting seed paper successfully.

Step 4: Light, Patience and Care
Place your pot or garden bed somewhere with good light. Check daily and keep the soil moist for the first one to two weeks. Depending on seed type and conditions, you’ll usually see germination begin within this time.
How We Make Seed Paper
By the time a seed paper badge reaches you, it’s already a product of upcycling, clean energy & craftsmanship. We’re marrying the age-old art of papermaking with modern eco-innovation to bring you something truly special for your events. Curious about how to make seed paper?

Handmade Process
In our Sunshine Coast studio, we blend the waste paper into a pulp using a repurposed industrial blender. The pulp is mixed with water & seeds, then hand-pressed into sheets using a mould & deckle (frames we built from reclaimed wood & mesh). It’s a labour of love.

Locally Sourced Waste Paper
We collect discarded paper from local businesses, schools & print shops (clean paper that would otherwise be landfill-bound). This forms the raw material for our seed paper pulp. By salvaging this waste, we reduce demand for new paper & give these fibres a second life.

Chemical-Free, Solar & Low-Water
We don’t use any harsh chemicals, bleaches, or dyes keeping the process non-toxic for the environment & ensuring the seeds remain unharmed. Compared to large paper mills, our process uses solar drying, minimal water – in fact, we only use grey water for pulp mixing.

Quality Checks
Each sheet is carefully checked for thickness, seed distribution & strength. We test germinate sample pieces from every batch to ensure the seeds are viable & will sprout for your attendees later. Only then do sheets get turned into Terra Tag badges.
