Plantable Seed Paper Event Badges & Name Tags

Give your next event a green twist with badges that blossom! Terra Tag’s plantable seed paper name badges are an innovative way to impress your guests & care for the planet. Handcrafted from reclaimed paper & embedded with seeds, these badges can be worn for your event & then planted to grow into real plants. They’re not just name tags – they’re little packets of life.

What Is Seed Paper? (The Eco Material That Grows)

Imagine a special kind of paper that has wildflower or herb seeds mixed right in. After it’s used, you can soak it, plant it in soil & watch it sprout. That’s seed paper! It’s like the James Bond of stationery – suave, multifunctional & surprisingly powerful. Each Terra Tag seed paper sheet is made by hand in Queensland from post-consumer paper waste. We work with a master papermaker (our founder, Rhonda) who infuses each batch with seeds selected for their beauty & resilience.

When you choose a seed paper name tag, you’re choosing a material that carries your name during the event & carries your values afterward. Wear it proudly during your conference or annual team meeting, then later plant it in a pot or garden. With a bit of water & sunshine, that humble name tag will transform into wildflowers or fragrant herbs. How’s that for a conversation starter?

Why Choose Seed Paper Name Tags for Your Event?

Seed paper badges make a big impression on attendees & check all the eco-friendly boxes. Here’s why event planners love them:

  • Memorable & Meaningful: When guests discover their name tag can be planted to grow flowers, you instantly create a wow factor. It’s an interactive keepsake that tells a sustainability story.

  • Zero Waste: Made from 100% post-consumer recycled paper & natural seeds, these badges leave behind no landfill waste. After the event, they either compost naturally or live on in someone’s garden.

  • Customisable & High-Quality: Our seed paper is thick & sturdy, ready for full-colour custom printing. You can add logos, attendee names, titles, & event branding – all with vibrant results. Each badge is individually crafted but uniform in quality, so your event branding stays on point.

  • Supports Your Mission: For eco-conscious organizations, seed paper badges are perfectly aligned with your values. They demonstrate innovation & commitment to sustainability in a tangible way.

  • Versatile Use: Ideal for green conferences, environmental campaigns, community workshops, weddings, music festivals – any gathering that wants to be both personal & planet-friendly.

Perfect for: Sustainable conferences, corporate retreats with a green mission, eco-conscious weddings, community gardening events, school/environmental club events, & non-profits or councils showcasing sustainability.

(In short: if you want an event badge that’s as inspiring as your event, seed paper is the way to grow!)

How It Works: From Name Badge to Blooming Garden

Using a seed paper name badge is as easy as any other – but what comes after is the fun part. Here’s the life cycle of a Terra Tag seed paper badge:

  1. Wear it: During your event, it’s a sturdy, attractive name badge that does the job perfectly. The beauty of seed paper gives guests a ‘wow’ reaction when it’s placed in their hands!

  2. Plant it: After the event, instead of throwing the badge away, attendees can take it home. Have them soak it in water, then plant it under a thin layer of soil (about 3mm) in a pot or garden.

  3. Water & Wait: With daily watering (to keep it moist) & some sunlight, the seed paper will begin to break down & release the seeds into the soil.

  4. Watch it Grow: In 1–3 weeks, sprouts will appear. Eventually, those sprouts turn into flowers or herbs, depending on the seed mix. The paper itself decomposes completely, leaving nothing but plants & happy memories!

Even if someone doesn’t have a green thumb, we include easy planting instructions on our website & included as a QR code on the back of the badge. We carefully select high-germination seeds, so with a bit of care, almost anyone can succeed in growing something. It’s a wonderful way to let the impact of your event live on.

(Fun fact: All our seeds are non-GMO & many are heirloom varieties. Any certified organic seeds we use are noted as such. We do the homework so you can enjoy the blooms.)

What Seed Options Are Available?

We offer a few delightful seed blends to choose from for your badges, each suited to different tastes & climates:

Lemon-scented Bottlebrush (Callistemon citrinus) in full bloom, a native Australian plant used in seed paper.

Lemon-scented Bottlebrush (Callistemon citrinus)

Talk about a showstopper! The Lemon-scented Bottlebrush is an Aussie native with serious flair—those bold red blooms don’t just look good, they’re a magnet for bees, birds & butterflies. It’s evergreen, lemon-zesty & tough-as-nails (just like our outback). Whether you're jazzing up a garden bed or a balcony pot, this resilient shrub brings colour, scent & wildlife-friendly vibes to your space.

Thriving herb garden with oregano, parsley, and thyme—plants commonly embedded in Terra Tag's seed paper.

Herb Garden Mix (Oregano, Parsley, Thyme)

Perfect for a culinary twist! This blend sprouts into kitchen herbs. Attendees can grow a mini herb garden from their name tag – how cool is that? The oregano, parsley & thyme combo thrives in pots or garden beds, providing fresh herbs for cooking. It’s like gifting an experience & flavour.

Colorful flower mix of Swan River Daisy, Forget-Me-Not, and Alyssum, grown from plantable seed paper tags.

Flower Mix (Swan River Daisy, Forget-Me-Not, Alyssum)

A mix of hardy native blooms like Forget-Me-Not, Alyssum & Swan River Daisy (sometimes Chamomile). This mix creates a burst of color & provides food for local bees & butterflies.

Not sure which seed blend is best for your event or region? Just ask us!

We’re full of (plant) wisdom & can recommend the ideal option based on when & where your event is happening. We’ve supplied plantable badges for events all over Australia, from tropical North Queensland to temperate Melbourne, so we know what grows well in each area.

Customisation Options – Let Your Creativity Grow

You dream it, we pulp it. When it comes to designing your seed paper badges, the possibilities are exciting:

  • Paper Colors & Texture: Our default seed paper is a natural off-white with visible seed flecks (charming & earthy). However, we can sometimes tint the paper with natural, non-toxic dyes or incorporate fun bits like recycled confetti, shredded maps, or flower petals if you have a creative vision. (For example, we once made seed paper using shredded old travel maps for a Tourism event – it looked amazing!)

  • Shapes & Sizes: While our standard badge sizes are rectangular (A7 or A6), we can do custom shapes on request. If you have an idea, let’s talk. We use dies to cut the paper, so we can create unique shapes to really make your brand pop.

  • Printing & Design: Provide your own artwork or work with our design team – either way, we’ll ensure your logo & text look fantastic on the seed paper’s textured surface. We have templates to guide placement of names, logos, QR codes, etc. Our printing process is calibrated for seed paper to get bright, clear results without harming the seeds.

  • Embedded Materials: Want something truly one-of-a-kind? We can sometimes embed small items into the paper during making – think tiny dried flower petals, glitter (biodegradable of course), or your brand’s shredded waste paper to upcycle it. It’s a bespoke touch that can tell a story (e.g., “this badge was made from recycled office paper from our HQ”).

(Behind the scenes: Terra Tag’s papermaking is done by hand with love. Picture vats of pulp, decks of screens & sun-drying racks – it’s part art, part science. We even use a solar-powered drying system & upcycled equipment to keep the process as low-impact as possible.)

Measurable Environmental Impact

Going green isn’t just a feel-good exercise – we help you measure the difference you make by choosing Terra Tag. Here are real examples of what our clients have achieved:

  • Tourism Australia Event: By using Terra Tag seed paper badges for a convention, they prevented approximately 66 kg of CO₂ emissions & eliminated the need for hundreds of plastic holders. Plus, the badges were made from upcycled old travel maps – tying into their theme & wowing attendees.

  • National Government Summit (ACCC): Swapping out plastic name tags for our seed paper ones saved an estimated 75 kg of carbon emissions & about 10 kg of plastic waste at a single event. It proved that even formal government events can successfully go green without a hitch.

  • International Conference Centre Showcase (Sydney): Our partnership with ICC Sydney for a summit led to a 105 kg reduction in CO₂ emissions compared to traditional badges & lanyards. That’s hundreds of plastic badges that never had to be produced. The impact was tangible & they proudly shared those stats with attendees to inspire further change.

Every Terra Tag order comes with a C02 Emissions Saved report (it’s in the quote calculator). We calculate how much plastic & carbon you avoided by choosing our solution, so you can include it in your sustainability reporting or share it with stakeholders. It’s sustainability you can quantify.

How We Make Seed Paper – Behind the Scenes

Close-up of hands shaping handmade seed paper, showcasing artisanal craft and sustainable production methods.

Curious about the creation process? We take sustainability seriously at every step in making Terra Tag seed paper:

  • Locally Sourced Waste Paper: We collect discarded paper from local businesses, schools & print shops (clean paper that would otherwise be landfill-bound). This forms the raw material for our seed paper pulp. By salvaging this waste, we reduce demand for new paper & give these fibers a second life.

  • Handmade Process: In our Sunshine Coast studio, we blend the waste paper into a pulp using a repurposed industrial blender (an old cafe smoothie blender we rescued – seriously!). The pulp is mixed with water & seeds, then hand-pressed into sheets using a mould & deckle (frames we built from reclaimed wood & mesh). It’s a labor of love that results in character-rich paper.

  • Chemical-Free & Low-Water: We don’t use any harsh chemicals, bleaches, or dyes – keeping the process non-toxic for the environment & ensuring the seeds remain unharmed. Compared to large paper mills, our process uses minimal water; we reuse greywater for pulp mixing & each batch sips only ~20 liters.

  • Solar Drying: Instead of energy-intensive dryers, we dry the paper using solar. This means almost no fossil fuels are used in production.

  • Quality Checks: Each sheet is carefully checked for thickness, seed distribution & strength. We test germinate sample pieces from every batch to ensure the seeds are viable & will sprout for your attendees later. Only then do sheets get turned into Terra Tag badges.

By the time a seed paper badge reaches you, it’s already a product of upcycling, clean energy & craftsmanship. We’re marrying the age-old art of papermaking with modern eco-innovation to bring you something truly special for your events.

FAQs: Plantable Seed Paper Name Badges

Q: Do seed paper name badges really grow into plants?

A: Yes! Each Terra Tag seed badge is loaded with high-germination seeds (wildflowers or herbs, depending on your choice). As long as you follow the planting steps – keep the paper moist & give it some sun – you’ll see sprouts in a couple of weeks. Typically, seedlings emerge in 7–21 days with proper care.

Q: How do I plant a seed paper name tag after the event?

A: It’s easy. Soak the badge in water for a few hours (this softens the paper). Then place it on soil in a pot or garden, cover with a very thin layer of soil & water generously. Keep it in a sunny spot & maintain moisture. In 1–3 weeks, voilà – little plants will start growing! We include detailed planting instructions on our site for your attendees. Read detailed planting instructions here.

Q: Which seed blend should I choose for my event in my state?

A: We have options tailored to different regions. For example, our Bottlebrush wildflower mix does great in NSW, QLD & VIC climates, bringing hardy native blooms. The Herb Garden Mix thrives in temperate areas & is good for indoor potting too. If your event is in WA or TAS, we’ll steer you toward our recycled name badges, due to quarantine restrictions - but don’t fret - our recycled badges are just as full of character! You can always consult with us – we’ll recommend the best seed option for your location & season.

Q: Can I get custom-shaped or unusually sized seed paper badges?

A: Absolutely. We love a creative challenge! We can do circles, ovals, or custom die-cut shapes (like a leaf shape, etc.). We just need a bit of extra lead time to arrange the cutting dies. Let us know your vision & we’ll work to make it reality. Custom sizes are also fine – we frequently produce A7 (roughly 74 x 105mm) & can do larger or smaller as needed.

Q: Are seed paper badges durable enough for a 2-3 day conference?

A: Yes — despite containing seeds, our badges are made from 300gsm paper & behave much like any robust cardstock name tag. They hold up for multi-day indoor events & normal handling. The only precaution: they aren’t plastic-coated, so if it rains hard or someone spills a drink directly on it, the paper can get soggy. In typical use, they’ll easily last your event & then some.

Q: Can you print full-colour designs & photos on seed paper?

A: Definitely. We use advanced digital printing that lays vibrant inks on the seed paper without harming the seeds. We’ll guide you on setting up artwork to account for the paper’s texture. The end result: your graphics will appear bright & clear. Photographs, logos with gradients, colorful illustrations – we’ve done it all on seed paper successfully.

Q: How long can I store seed paper badges before using or planting them?

A: We recommend using or planting them within 12 months for best germination results. The seeds are fine & dormant in the paper as long as it’s kept in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight for ~2 years. If you hold an annual event, you could even order extra & use them the next year, but generally fresher is better for planting.

Q: Can you ship seed paper products Australia-wide? What about overseas?

A: We ship our products all across Australia. For WA & Tasmania clients, we recommend our recycled name badges due to state strict quarantine rules. Unfortunately, we cannot ship internationally – Australian quarantine laws won’t allow seed paper to be sent out of the country. But within Australia – from Brisbane to Perth – we’ve got you covered!
