The Art of Sustainability: My Path from Artist to Eco-Innovator

From a fine art major to a Designer and now master papermaker, my path has been woven with threads of creativity, passion, and a commitment to striving to do better as a person by making values-based choices. It's something I've learned over time, and I often smile to myself when I consider how both the arts and doing something that benefits the environment have become a business that combines all the things I love.

The Shift to Sustainability

This shift towards environmental sustainability was a natural evolution of my artistic journey. When tasked with organising a workshop, I was confronted with the prevalent use of plastic name badges and lanyards. This was the moment I decided to seek alternatives, leading to the birth of Terra Tags. It was a fusion of my artistic background and a newfound purpose in sustainability.

Art and Environment Intertwined

At Terra Tag, art and environmental consciousness are inseparably intertwined. The process of creating our tags is not just a manufacturing routine; it's an artistic endeavour. From handcrafting sheets of recycled or seed-embedded paper to the thoughtful design of each tag, every step is infused with creativity and environmental consideration. The QR code on each tag, guiding to planting instructions or recycling advice, exemplifies our dedication to the entire lifecycle of our products.

Overcoming Challenges

Our journey has been marked by challenges, particularly in gaining market visibility and identifying our ideal clientele. We've learned that our perfect clients are those who appreciate the blend of quality and sustainability, understanding that each Terra Tag purchased contributes to reducing landfill waste.

The Artisanal Process

My experiences in papermaking, both in Italy and Japan, have profoundly influenced Terra Tags. This ancient craft is a delicate balance with nature, using rainwater and waste paper to create something both beautiful and functional. The tactile experience of crafting the pulp, judging its consistency, and creating perfect sheets is an art form in itself.

Impact and Vision

The most rewarding aspect of Terra Tags has been working with clients who share our vision for a more sustainable future. Our goal is to make Terra Tags a well-known name in the event industry, reducing event waste one tag at a time. We envision a future where sustainable choices like Terra Tags are the norm.

A Personal Reflection

This journey has reinforced my belief in the power of small actions. As a parent, I am driven by the desire to leave a better world for future generations. Terra Tags is more than a product; it's a symbol of a movement towards a more sustainable and conscious way of living.

A Message of Hope and Action

Through Terra Tag, I hope to convey a message of hope and positive action. We all have the power to make a difference, no matter how small our steps may seem. It's about taking that first step, and I am proud to be walking this path with Terra Tags.

28 years experience as a strategic designer, ethnographic researcher and people leader at Bain, Westpac and McKinsey. I'm insatiably curious and always thinking about the people who experience a solution when I design. I love complex problems quite simply because they present a wide range of perspectives that can be resolved when rooted in deep user research.
